Dr. Rospidah Ghazali is a development economist and sustainability scholar with over 27 years of academic and research experience at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). Her expertise spans development economics, environmental sustainability, and food security policy, with a focus on inclusive growth and the wellbeing of B40 (low-income) communities in Malaysia.

She has led and contributed to numerous nationally funded research projects under the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT), Ministry of Environment and Water (KASA), and The Habitat Foundation, addressing issues such as community resilience, rural livelihoods, and sustainable resource management. Among her notable works are projects on economic valuation and sustainable livelihoods of Patin Buah fishermen, policy evaluation of B40 programmes, and Malaysia’s Environmental Policy 2030.

Dr. Rospidah also plays a prominent role in national policy development. She serves as a Permanent Committee Member and Executive Committee Member in several clusters under the National Food Security Policy, appointed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, and contributes to the Agriculture and Food Security Cluster of the Akademi Profesor Malaysia (APM).

An award-winning academic, she has received the Excellence Service Award (2019), 20 Years Service Award (2018), and MyRA Research Excellence Award (2023) from UKM. Her scholarly output includes books, policy papers, and journal articles in outlets such as Planning Malaysia, the Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Business, and Springer volumes, reflecting her commitment to advancing sustainable and inclusive development.

At UKM, Dr. Rospidah teaches and supervises postgraduate and undergraduate courses in Natural Resource and Environmental Economics, Development and Environment, and Sustainability Science. She remains dedicated to nurturing future leaders in sustainability, economic policy, and community development.

The Institute for Environment and Development (LESTARI) was established on 1st October 1994 as a multidisciplinary institute within the structure of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. It fulfills the aspirations of the university, as envisioned by the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to realise the goal of sustainable development through research and capacity development.

LESTARI was also established to serve as a reference centre capable of dealing with environment and development issues, assisting government in formulating policies based on research of a holistic and balanced kind. The development function is directed towards enhancing human resource capacity through skill development and training, for both government and private sectors.

Vision

LESTARI aims to be the centre of excellence in research and training on matters pertaining to environment and development in Malaysia and the Asia Pacific.

Missions

1. As a reference point, addressing issues pertaining to sustainability in development.

2. As a focal point, conducting multi-disciplinary and integrated research in balancing synergies and trade-offs between environment and development.

3. As a primary mover, influencing policy and building capacity to meet the aspirations of sustainable development.
