What is Biodiversity?

Associate Professor Dr Farah Shafawati Mohd-Taib
Head, Natural History Museum, & Wildlife Disease and Ecology Research Group (WildDER), UKM

Associate Professor Dr Farah Shafawati Mohd-Taib is a leading wildlife ecologist and parasitologist whose research bridges biodiversity conservation, zoonotic disease ecology, and human–environment interactions. Based at the Department of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), she brings over 18 years of field and academic experience in vertebrate ecology, parasitology, and zoonoses.

Dr Farah currently serves as Head of the Natural History Museum, Faculty of Science and Technology, and leads the Wildlife Disease and Ecology Research Group (WildDER) at UKM. Her work integrates ecological data with public-health perspectives, advancing understanding of how environmental change influences disease emergence in wildlife and human populations.

Her recent projects include developing wildlife-friendly oil-palm landscapes, conducting metagenomic analyses of rodent-borne pathogens, and engaging local communities as wildlife guardians in conservation initiatives across Malaysia. Her research has attracted national funding and international collaboration, reflecting her commitment to both scientific excellence and community-based conservation.

A prolific author, Dr Farah has produced over 40 journal papers and 13 books, including recent titles such as Leptospirosis di Malaysia: Epidemiologi, Diagnostik dan Ekologi Vektor (2025) and Ekologi & Penyakit Bawaan Tikus (2024). Her work appears in high-impact journals such as Scientific Reports, Evolution, Zoonoses and Public Health, and Urban Ecosystems. Her Google Scholar record lists over 600 citations with an h-index of 14, underscoring her sustained research influence.

Dr Farah is also an experienced supervisor, having guided multiple PhD and Master’s students to completion, and regularly contributes to national biodiversity and health consultancy projects—including UNESCO’s review of the Tasik Chini Biosphere Reserve and wildlife impact assessments for Tenaga Nasional Berhad Research (TNBR).

Driven by a passion for wildlife and ecosystems, Dr Farah champions interdisciplinary collaboration to balance conservation and societal well-being. Her leadership continues to shape Malaysia’s scientific contributions to wildlife ecology, disease surveillance, and sustainable environmental management.

Eneilsha Nelson Entap, PhD Candidate, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM)

Eneilsha Nelson Entap is currently pursuing a PhD in Science (Biology) at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) as part of the Wildlife Disease and Ecology Research (WildDER) Team, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Farah Shafawati Mohd Taib. Her research explores freshwater lake ecosystems, focusing on wildlife conservation, ecological dynamics, and the relationships between habitat quality and biodiversity.

Her work combines satellite imagery, spatial analysis, and field-based biodiversity data to model habitats across wetland and forest landscapes. Through this interdisciplinary approach, she aims to advance understanding of how land-use changes influence ecosystem integrity and species diversity.

Eneilsha is a recipient of the prestigious MyBrainSc full scholarship, awarded by the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia, in recognition of her academic excellence and research contributions.

Passionate about conservation and environmental research, she actively seeks opportunities for collaboration, academic exchange, and knowledge sharing in the fields of ecology, conservation biology, and remote sensing applications for biodiversity monitoring.
